Empire of the Moon
War of the Worlds:Frontlines (Northern Frights Publishing) Sci-fi Anthology/Edited by JW Schnarr
Stories inspired by the great HG Wells himself make up this anthology of science-fiction shorts. My story begins with an astronomer in Scotland watching the skies and ends with a battle for the planet.
Extract: His hands were actually shaking a little as he took hold of the large, mounted telescope and bent forward to place his eye to the viewer. He felt like he was keeping a secret and forbidden liaison with a seductive mistress. There she was, clear as a bell, white and large and magnificent. Not a cloud in sight tonight, conditions were perfect. Napier wondered how long he would be out here straining his old eyes before he caught a glimpse of those magical lights again, if at all, but to his absolute amazement he saw a flash almost at once. It seemed brighter than the night before, if that were possible. Wider as well. Within seconds Napier saw another light, and another, and another. His heart was racing as he tried to keep count of the white circles appearing before his eyes. They looked as if they were all above the moon’s surface by some distance, hovering. The lights suddenly all moved as one and appeared to take an arrowhead formation. This was incredible stuff and Napier knew it; yet even as he felt his chest fill with pride and joy at witnessing such a wondrous event, a small knot in the very bottom of his stomach made him think this was nothing to do with the Americans after all.

A Splash of Orange
What If..? (Readme Publishing) Science Fiction Anthology/Edited by Casey Quinn/Aston West
In 2009 Readme Publishing's Editor Casey Quinn opened a contest for science-fiction short stories based around the key-phrase What If? This anthology is a collection of the top 14 entries. My story concerns a search-and-rescue team running into some strange events on Venus as they try to reach the one human colony on the planet.
Extract: 'Without pausing for breath or taking a second to wipe down their filthy visors, both men continued over the crest and straight down the loose slope into the next basin. Waiting at the bottom with weapons drawn were the two strangers in orange, each down on one knee. Helger and Farmer barely had time to see them, let alone react, as they slid down the scree out of control, trying to backpedal desperately in the puffing pollen ground. Two blasts exploded from the weapons below them, blinding flashes of blue as loud as the thunder in the horribly close Venusian night, and Helger and Farmer were thrown backwards against the loose rocky slope as more lightning whip-lashed in the Heavens.'
Release date: December 2009 - Available At Amazon
